Many of my students and clients from my leadership workshops in Malaysia and Singapore were expecting to have more time since they started working from home. After all, there is no need for braving the traffic, waiting for the MRT, dressing or making up. Just straight from the breakfast table to the home office in their boxer shorts!
However, almost every one of them has told me that they find themselves in the same predicament of not having enough time again. Even some of the motivational and sales speakers in Singapore said the same thing. They end up working longer hours and having more meetings. According to one study, employees are spending 24% more time in one-on-one meetings and 29% more time in team meetings than before the pandemic.
In the end, the non-critical but valuable things get left out. Exercise is once again on the backburner. Reading is done only "when time permits". Learning a language can wait (I ain't travelling anywhere anyway). Meditation for better mental health? No way with these kids around....
The truth is, it's not about having enough time. It is about MAKING enough time. Your life will always be "busy" if you continue to allow the daily demands get the better of you. Hence, it is essential in these times of change to plan, rather than just let "life happen to you".
Instead, make life happen for you.
