As some of us progress in life and move up the ladder of success, we allow our ego to grow as well. I have met a young upcoming speaker recently who acted like he was the already among the world’s top motivational speakers! While it is absolutely normal to be proud of our achievements and recognize how far we have come, it is another thing to let the ego inflate indiscriminately.
As a resilience speaker, I always say that the ego is the mind's identity of our own construction, an identity which usually is false or not an accurate reflection of the state of things. An inflated ego comes hand in hand with arrogance.
It’s important to stay vigilant because ego and arrogance can destroy a successful business or team from the inside. When one team member feels they’re more important than the rest and their attitude goes unchecked, suddenly the rest of the team may not be so willing to engage and share their own ideas. An arrogant team member is willing to sacrifice the good of the whole to continue to feel important. This is an important lesson which I embed in the team building Singapore companies engage me for.
The cure for arrogance is a willingness to look at your actions through a lens of humility, wisdom and respect. Honest self-evaluation can be hard, but it’s incredibly valuable in this day and age.
