Earlier this week, news broke out of an overworked manager from one of the big 4 accounting firm who was shockingly found dead. This is not the first time we hear of such disturbing news, especially in overworked cities around the world. Many motivational sales trainers in Malaysia and Singapore knew this person.
As I was reading the article, these 4 words popped into my mind - DEAD AT THE DESK. While most overworked leaders and executives in companies will not lose their life, they are EMOTIONALLY DEAD at work. I know many from my course of work as a motivational speaker for corporate events.
They are not engaged in the workplace, let alone enthusiastic or passionate about the daily routines. Work has become a chore, only for the purpose of feeding the family or paying the bills. One of my clients said he felt like a "thankless zombie in a sea robots" in his company.
As humans, we thrive on acknowledgement and encouragement. We do not need to depend on others to provide such fuel for us to continue to strive. We can get it ourselves, by giving our best each and every time and acknowledging it with a pat on the back, even if it comes from our hand. It is the internal feeling of accomplishment that is most important, not the glittery awards or public shout-outs.
So the next time you did something well, give yourself a pat on the back and whisper "well done". It may just save your life and prevent you from being DEAD AT THE DESK.
