We all have limited time, energy and mental power. When faced with problems, issues or challenges, there are a myriad of things we can focus on. Too often, we waste our limited resources on things we cannot change which can only end in futility.
Instead, focus all your energy and effort on what you CAN do about the situation. In the leadership workshop Malaysia companies engage me for, I often share a story of how a manager of mine stole my materials and started on her own. She even claimed that I stole her materials! Initially, I utilize all my effort in stopping her, even reaching out to lawyers to no avail.
After a while, I realize that the situation cannot be changed. It is done, and I decided to put my energy on what I can do. And what I can do is to improve my business processes, expand my knowledge, to be more inspirational, to learn to motivate my audience to action, to be a great speaker. The challenge I faced fuelled me, and I was determined to be the best in my field.
So, the next time a problem or challenge comes your way, ask yourself the simple question - what can I do and what can't I do. As a mental toughness trainer, I say focus all your energy on the former and restrain from spending time on the latter.
